This page explains how Unspool handles information about children, including children under 13. It is written for parents and guardians who create and manage household accounts.
Parent consent
A parent or guardian creates the household account, adds students, and decides whether a child may use Unspool. By adding a student and enabling student access, the parent authorizes Unspool to collect and use that student's information to provide the service.
Student accounts
Parents may create student usernames and passwords. Student accounts are tied to the parent-controlled household. Students cannot own the household account, manage billing, invite separate households, or change parent account settings.
Student information we collect
We may collect student name, username, grade or learning level, subjects, lesson progress, answers, completed lesson activity, practice results, reward activity, avatar choices, and generated-lesson requests.
How student data is used
We use student information to show lessons, personalize learning paths, generate lessons, save progress, show parent activity, provide rewards, troubleshoot issues, maintain safety, and improve product reliability.
AI lesson generation
Student questions, parent prompts, subject context, and lesson context may be sent to AI service providers when generated lessons, images, audio, or related learning features are used. Parents should not put highly sensitive information into prompts or student questions.
Student answers
Unspool saves answers and lesson activity when needed for progress, feedback, records, or parent review. Internal analytics avoid raw freeform answers, student names, parent names, emails, usernames, and full lesson text.
Sharing and advertising
We do not sell children's personal information. We do not use student work for third-party advertising. We do not serve targeted advertising to children. We share student information with service providers only as needed to operate Unspool.
Parent access
Parents can review student information through the product where available and can contact Unspool to request access to additional student information associated with their household account.
Correction and deletion
Parents can correct student details in the product where available or contact Unspool for help. Parents can request deletion of student information or the household account. Deletion may remove lessons, progress, and records.
Stopping collection
Parents can disable or remove student access, stop using generated-lesson features, or request account deletion. If a parent asks us to stop using student information that is necessary to provide the service, some or all student features may no longer work.
Retention
We keep student information while the household account is active or as needed to provide lessons, records, billing support, security, abuse prevention, legal compliance, backups, and dispute resolution. We delete or deidentify information when it is no longer needed.
Data minimization
Parents should add only the information needed for homeschool use. Students should not enter passwords, card numbers, government identifiers, private medical details, exact addresses, or other highly sensitive information into lesson prompts, answers, or support messages.
If a child contacts us
If we learn that a child gave us contact information outside a parent-managed account without appropriate parent involvement, we will use it only to respond appropriately, involve the parent when needed, or delete it.
School-authorized use
Unspool is primarily a household homeschool product. If a school or co-op uses Unspool for students, it should confirm that its parent-consent, FERPA, COPPA, state student-privacy, contract, and record-retention obligations are satisfied.
Contact for parents
Parents can ask questions, review student information, request deletion, or raise child-privacy concerns at hello@unspool.net. You can also use the contact form.
