Light Travels in Straight Lines

Warm, friendly side-view of a slightly misty room at night: a handheld flashlight on the left sending a straight, pale-gold beam through tiny droplet specks toward a far wall. A simple wooden toy animal stands in the beam; a crisp matching shadow falls on the wall directly behind it. Soft dust motes along the beam. No scary lighting, no faces in distress. Labels optional: flashlight (light source), straight beam, toy, shadow.

Big question

How does light move from a source?

A flashlight beam makes a straight path through mist because tiny droplets scatter some of the light toward your eyes. Follow that path and you will see why shadows have sharp edges and why you cannot peek around a corner without a mirror.

By the end

You will be able to say, in your own words, that light travels in straight lines and point to clues (beams, shadows, blocked views) that show it.
